Gnomes

Gnomes are commonplace on Karion. They are more or less the same as gnomes on other worlds, and so I will say little about their appearance. Tinker gnomes, found primarily on Krynn, the home of the Dragonlance campaign, are the type found on Karion, though they look no different than ordinary (rock) gnomes.

PERSONALITY:

Gnomes tend to be a bit scatter-brained. They love machines, and tend to claim that anything that can be done by magic can be done faster and easier with machines (usually, the opposite is true). They also are much more impressed with flash than with function, and will add as many bells, whistles, and lights as possible to their inventions, whether or not it serves any useful purpose. Their inventions are always overly complicated, and rarely work as expected. Gnomes also love to talk, and will never run out of stories. When they get excited, or when they want to annoy other races, they are capable of talking at such a high speed that there is only a 50% chance of being able to understand them. Gnomes are extremely proud of their race and their stories always seem to get mixed around so that gnomes come out on top.

LIFESTYLE:

A gnome spends his or her entire life attempting to complete a Life Quest-to attain all the knowledge about any one area of knowledge. This is usually quite specific, like studying the screw or lever. Few actually do complete their Life Quest, but it gives them something to do when they're not blowing themselves up. They love knowledge of all kinds, and will read anything they can get their hands on. The best part of this is that no matter what information you need, chances are there is a gnome somewhere who knows it.

TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY:

Gnomes will tend to use whatever is available at the time, from picks and hammers to screwdrivers and chisels. They are also known for inventing various types of "special" weapons, most of a dubious nature. Their favorite armor is leather, packed with tons of tiny spaces for tools, treasure, food, booby traps, etc. (AC of 7).

Gnome Pick: (Damage 2D4 +2/1D6 +1, Speed 5, Type P) A gnome pick is a 4 1/2' long hammer with a pick on the other side. It is a very common weapon, but most gnomes will add "improvements", making each one as individualistic as the gnome itself.

Gnomish Grenade: These are small jars of pottery that explode when thrown. They save vs. crushing blow at an 18 and have a range of 2/4/6. The types of grenades are:

Fire: (Damage 1D6, Blast Radius 1') Burns for 2 rounds and ignites any combustibles (save vs. normal fire).

Flash: (Damage none, Blast Radius 5') Everyone who sees it must save vs. spell or be blinded for 1D4 rounds.

Gas: (Damage 1D4, Blast Radius 3') Save vs. breath weapon or be knocked unconscious for 1D4 rounds.

Pepper: (Damage 1, Blast Radius 3') Save vs. breath weapon or be incapacitated with sneezing for 1D4 rounds.

Smoke: (Damage none, Blast Radius 5') Lasts for 1D4 rounds.

Thunder: (Damage 1D4, Blast Radius 5') Save vs. rod, staff or wand or be knocked unconscious by the boom for 1D4 rounds.
