The Karion System

This page has a lot of information that is kind of interesting, but has very little impact on the game. In fact, aside from the information on Karion and its moons, most of this will probably never be used. I've been toying with the idea of a sci-fi game set on Karion in the far future, so this stuff might be used for that (or you could modify it to fit into a Star Wars or Rifts campaign, for instance), but if you don't play those games or just aren't interested, I suggest you skim over the parts on Karion and then skip to the individual continental regions.

KARION

Karion is the second planet from its sun, and is one of two planets capable of supporting life. It has an average diameter of about 25,000 miles, making it bigger than the Earth by a negligible amount. About 78-80% of the surface is covered by water. There are no polar ice caps on Karion, as warm water from the equator flows down across the poles due to strange oceanic currents. The average temperature on the surface ranges from -20° near the poles to around 115° at the equator. The climate is more mild than Earth, and the temperate zones are about 20-30% larger. Surface gravity is roughly 1.1 G's.

Karion is orbited by two moons. The closest and smallest of the two is Dimitarii, a roughly spherical ball of dark gray rock. It does not reflect light as well as most celestial bodies, and appears to be quite dim from the planet below. Its average diameter is about 1,720 miles and the surface gravity is about 0.1 G's. Aritarii, the larger and more distant moon, is covered with a fine layer of blue-gray dust. It has a diameter of roughly 2,000 miles, making it smaller than our own moon by about 160 miles. The surface gravity is about 0.15 G's.

THE KARION SYSTEM

The star system that contains the planet Karion has a medium sized yellow sun, almost identical to that of Earth. There are seven planets: Atandei, Karion, Makrush, Arhane, Kamquata, Jajamba, and Bedula. Only the inner six are visible from Karion without the aide of a telescope; Bedula can be seen fairly well even with very simple telescopes.

Atandei is a tiny red-orange planet that orbits at a distance roughly half that between Mercury and Venus. It has a very thin atmosphere, made mostly of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Surface temperatures are much too high to support life, even if the air was breathable. Gravity is about 2.6 G's. Atandei has no moons.

Karion holds an orbit roughly 500,000 miles farther from the sun than Earth. It has two moons and is home to several intelligent species.

Makrush is the only other planet in the system capable of supporting life. Atmosphere, temperature, and even gravity are comparable to Earth. There is water on the surface and two large polar ice caps, but there is no life. Surface gravity is about 0.83 G's. Makrush has no moons.

Arthane is the first of two gas giants. It is a bright yellow-orange in color, with horizontal red stripes. It is about 1/2 the size of Jupiter. Arthane has five moons, all of which are either balls of ice or solid rock.

Kamquata is the second and larger gas giant. It holds an orbit near the outer edge of the system, well away from Arthane. In size it is roughly 20% larger than Jupiter. Kamquata is blue-green in color, and most astronomers on Karion currently believe it is covered by water. There are 12 moons orbiting Kamquata, one of which is roughly the size of the planet Mars. Kamquata's gravity affects the orbit of Jajamba, giving it an erratic triangular shape.

Jajamba is a large planet, almost 5 times the size of Earth. The planet is covered by a thick green cloud layer, and is orbited by a pair of tiny rings and two moons.

Bedula is the most distant planet in the system. It is red in color, and is about twice the size of Earth. It has three small moons, which orbit it at different angles.

Like I said, interesting background info, but not important. If the sci-fi game idea makes it through my screening process and becomes one of my many "active projects", this stuff will come in handy. Otherwise, I might just get rid of this page and move all the relevant information elsewhere.

Anyway, enough of my musings...
